The beauties of Provence are as legion as they are legendary, and have captivated visitors since the Phocaeans first landed on her shores over two thousand years ago. The loveliness of this luminous landscape, wedged between the snow-capped Alps and the glimmering blue of the Mediterranean, provides the perfect backdrop to its many sites of architectural and historical interest, reflecting the region's extraordinarily rich heritage.

This book sets out to unveil these different faces of Provence, through the history of the place, the people and the buildings they constructed : from the dramatic Drôme and the Alpes de Haute Provence, the watery Gard and the grandeur of Luberon, down to the flat salt marshes, craggily wild calanques and pretty coastal coves that fringe the sea from Camargue to Toulon and Hyères.

Stunning photography leads the reader through six proposed circuits, revealing the extraordinary discoveries from early Roman archaeological sites, the pomp and patronage of the Avignon popes, the wealth invested in grandiose châteaux, the austerity of military forts and the quiet serenity of abbey cloisters. Always in the background the unmistakeable colours and clear contours of Provence unfold in the brightness of the light that so enriched the painting of Cézanne and Van Gogh, and inspired the writings of Daudet, Mistral and Giono.
